Boko Haram Using AI Tools To Enhance Bomb-Making, Security Report Reveals

A new report has revealed that Boko Haram insurgents are increasingly exploiting Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to obtain information and solve operational challenges, raising fresh concerns over the misuse of emerg

ing technologies by extremist groups.
The report, published by The New York Times on Friday, disclosed that terrorists have turned to AI-powered chatbots for information relating to military tac

tics, weapons maintenance and explosives.
The findings were based on a study by Antonia Juelich, a terrorism and technology researcher at the University of Cambridge, who interviewed former Boko Haram members and commanders in Nigeria over the past year.
According to the report, some former insurgents admitted using AI tools to address practical problems encountered during attacks.
A former Boko Haram commander reportedly explained how the group used AI during an attempted operation against a military base after fighters encountered difficulties crossing a defensive trench around the facility.

“We used AI to learn how to do this. We gave it information, like what motorcycles we use and the distance we need to jump and so on, and it gave us steps on what we have to do,” the former commander was quoted as saying.
The report noted that the use of AI by insurgents extends beyond battlefield challenges, with terrorists exploring the technology for various operational purposes.
Security experts have expressed concern that the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence could provide violent extremist groups with new capabilities if adequate safeguards are not implemented.
The development has renewed calls for stronger monitoring of digital platforms and increased cooperation among governments, technology companies and security agencies to prevent the exploitation of AI for criminal activities.
