Senate Moves to Establish West African University of Legislative Studies. The Senate has taken the first step towards establishing the West African University of Legislative Studies following the first reading of the West African University of Legislative Studies (Establishment) Bill, 2026, sponsored by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the proposed university would transform the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) into a full-fledged institution dedicated to legislative education, democratic governance, research and institutional development.According to Akpabio, the institution could serve as a regional centre of excellence, providing lawmakers and public officials across West Africa with the knowledge and skills needed to strengthen democratic institutions and promote cooperation. He added that the initiative reflects the Senate’s commitment to strengthening governance and positioning Nigeria as a centre of excellence in democratic leadership.

However, the bill remains at an early legislative stage and must go through further legislative processes before it can become law..#Nigeria #Senate #GodswillAkpabio #Democracy #NigeriaNew
