The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the presidential nomination of former President Goodluck Jonathan submitted by the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The PDP faction had earlier announced that it submitted Jonathan’s nomination alongside those of its governorship, National Assembly and state assembly candidates to the electoral body.
The group said the submission was made manually after it was allegedly denied access to INEC’s electronic nomination platform.
However, INEC dismissed the submission, insisting that all candidate nominations must be processed through its approved online portal in accordance with its electoral guidelines.
The commission’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Eta-Messi, said INEC does not recognise manual submission of candidates.
“Submission is only done on a dedicated portal as stipulated by our regulations and guidelines, please,” Eta-Messi stated.
The electoral body’s position has effectively invalidated the nomination submitted by the Turaki faction and has raised fresh concerns over the status of candidates presented by the group for the 2027 elections.
