The affected soldiers were attached to the 162 Amphibious Battalion stationed along the Mandara–Buratai Road. According to the classified document, the troops were declared to have “absconded” from their duty post with their personal weapons after the insurgent attack.SaharaReporters had exclusively reported on June 5 that Boko Haram terrorists overran the military position along the Mandara–Buratai Road in the early hours of the day, killing at least eight soldiers and beheading them during the assault.The latest military document indicates that, in the aftermath of the attack, the Army classified 104 personnel from the battalion as deserters, alleging that they abandoned their post with their assigned rifles following the deadly raid.
The development highlights the growing security challenges facing troops deployed in Nigeria’s North-East, where military formations continue to come under repeated attacks by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups.
