Reps Urge Tough Diplomatic Action Against South Africa as 282 Nigerians Return HomeThe House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to impose strong diplomatic measures against South Africa over renewed xenophobic attacks, alleged extrajudicial killings, and the reported systematic persecution of Nigerians and other African nationals living in the country.

The resolution was passed on Thursday following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the lawmaker representing Kanke/Kanam/Pankshin Federal Constituency of Plateau State, Yusuf Gagdi.The lawmakers’ call came as 282 stranded Nigerians were evacuated from South Africa and arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, aboard an Air Peace flight.According to a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the fourth evacuation flight landed at about 7:30 p.m. on Thursday with 282 returnees, including 12 infants.

The House urged the Federal Government to take decisive diplomatic steps to protect the lives and rights of Nigerians in South Africa, expressing concern over the recurring attacks and the safety of citizens residing in the country.The lawmakers also reaffirmed the need for sustained efforts to ensure the welfare and protection of Nigerians abroad while addressing the growing concerns over xenophobic violence in South Africa.
