Tinubu Orders FCCPC to Probe Tech Giants, AI Platforms Over Alleged Anti-Competitive PracticesPresident Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate major technology companies and Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms operating in Nigeria over allegations of anti-competitive practices and the unlawful exploitation of news content. The President’s directive is aimed at addressing concerns about the activities of digital platforms accused of engaging in unfair market conduct, including the unauthorized use of news content produced by media organisations.
According to the directive, the FCCPC is expected to examine whether the operations of the affected technology firms and AI platforms violate Nigeria’s competition and consumer protection laws, particularly in areas relating to market dominance, fair competition and the protection of intellectual property. The investigation will also assess the impact of the alleged practices on Nigeria’s media industry, content creators and consumers, as concerns continue to grow over the use of journalistic content by AI-powered platforms without adequate authorisation or compensation.
The outcome of the probe is expected to guide the Federal Government’s next steps in strengthening regulatory oversight of the digital economy while promoting fair competition, innovation and consumer protection.
