President Bola Tinubu has celebrated Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka on his 92nd birthday, describing the renowned playwright and activist as an exceptional individual whose contributions to literature, democracy and good governance have had a lasting impact on Nigeria and the world.
Tinubu, in a birthday message released on Sunday ahead of Soyinka’s birthday on Monday, said individuals of Soyinka’s calibre are rare and often emerge only once in a generation.
“Exceptional individuals like Professor Soyinka do not come often in a generation. He is one of those who illuminate the path for humanity, challenge convention and refuse to remain silent in the face of oppression and injustice,” the President said.
The President congratulated Soyinka, praising his achievements as a playwright, novelist, poet, essayist and advocate for good governance.
Tinubu noted that Soyinka made history in 1986 as the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, adding that the literary icon has received several international honours for his outstanding contributions to society.
The President also acknowledged Soyinka’s role in Nigeria’s democratic struggles, particularly his opposition to military rule and involvement in the June 12 pro-democracy movement.
“I also recall Professor Soyinka’s courageous struggle against military dictatorship over the years and his efforts during the June 12 struggle, for which we were both in the trenches,” Tinubu stated.
Describing Soyinka as one of Nigeria’s greatest national assets, Tinubu said the professor’s wisdom, courage and commitment to national development continue to inspire generations.
“Today, I salute one of our nation’s living repositories of history, knowledge and courage. That he is with us is a gift we will always treasure. I thank him for his unwavering faith in the Nigerian project and his wise counsel,” he added.
The President further praised Soyinka’s global influence, noting that his works and activism have inspired writers, scholars and advocates for justice across the world.
“As he marks this birthday, I join the world in celebrating his profound influence on generations of writers, scholars and activists, as well as his sacrifices for our nation. I wish ‘Kongi’ many more years in excellent health,” Tinubu said.
