Six persons have been confirmed dead after a speeding Toyota car crashed into traders and commercial motorcyclists at Umuikaa Junction in Isiala South Local Government Area of Abia State.
The accident occurred on Tuesday along the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway when the black Toyota vehicle, reportedly travelling from the Umuahia axis, lost control and rammed into people at the busy junction.
Seven other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, while six motorcycles were damaged in the crash.
Reports indicated that many of the victims were female traders who were carrying out their businesses at the junction when the vehicle veered off the road. The car also hit commercial motorcycle operators before eventually crashing into a building.
The bodies of the deceased were evacuated to the mortuary after they were confirmed dead, while injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
The official cause of the crash has not been disclosed by relevant authorities, although some residents linked the incident to possible over speeding or brake failure.
Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abia State, C.C. Ngozi Ezeoma, said the accident occurred at Umuikaa Junction.
