Osun Election: Police Bar Amotekun, CJTF, Hunters, Others From Security DutiesThe Nigeria Police Force has barred the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun, vigilante groups, the Joint Civilian Task Force (CJTF), hunters’ associations, community-based security groups and neighbourhood watch outfits from participating in security operations during Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.The directive was issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, through the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, ahead of the August 15, 2026 election.The police said the affected groups were not authorised to escort electoral materials, guard polling units, mount checkpoints, carry firearms or perform any other election-security functions.The Force warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against engaging, arming or deploying the non-state security outfits for election-related activities.It further stated that anyone who sponsors or deploys unauthorised security groups during the election would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
According to the police, election security across Osun’s 30 local government areas would be handled by constitutionally recognised security agencies, including the police, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other statutory bodies.The Force also warned against ballot snatching, voter intimidation, vote buying, thuggery, hate speech and clashes between rival supporters, urging all political actors and voters to ensure a peaceful electoral process.The directive comes amid heightened political tension in the state ahead of Saturday’s governorship poll.
