African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has backed calls for a new national minimum wage of N500,000 monthly for Nigerian workers.
Sowore made the demand in a statement shared on his verified X handle, where he urged Nigerians to support leaders committed to improving workers’ welfare rather than those who have allegedly neglected their concerns.
His comment followed the recent demand by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for a N500,000 minimum wage during the Nigeria Rights of Workers Summit held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
Reacting to the development, Sowore said it was encouraging that the labour unions had aligned with a position the AAC had advocated for over time.
He argued that the demand was necessary due to the country’s economic challenges and the rising cost of living, insisting that Nigerian workers deserved a living wage.
“Now that there is consensus, the focus must shift from declarations to action. Let’s unite and fight until Nigerian workers receive a living wage of at least N500,000,” Sowore stated.
The activist maintained that improved wages were essential to addressing the hardship faced by workers across the country.
