The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, has urged residents of flood-prone communities across Nigeria to heed early warning alerts and relocate to safer locations as the rainy season intensifies.Umar gave the advice in a statement issued on Saturday by the agency’s Press Unit, warning that the current period of heightened rainfall poses an increased risk of flooding in vulnerable communities.According to the statement, the NEMA Director-General said the ongoing heavy rains require residents in at-risk areas to take proactive measures to safeguard lives and property.
She also called for the activation of community-level flood mitigation measures to minimise the impact of flooding, stressing the need for collective efforts by local authorities and residents to improve preparedness.Umar urged communities to remain vigilant, monitor weather advisories and comply with evacuation directives where necessary, noting that early action is critical to reducing the devastating effects of floods.The agency reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to strengthen disaster preparedness and response efforts across the country as the rainy season continues.
