The Leader of Njiko Igbo Forum, Rev. Dr. Okechukwu Christopher Obioha, has warned that Nigeria may not be able to successfully conduct the 2027 general elections if former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is prevented from appearing on the ballot.
Obioha made the remark following a Federal High Court ruling delivered on Friday, which directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party.
According to DAILY POST, Justice Isah Dashen, who delivered the judgment in Lokoja, held that the court’s earlier decision had affected the rights of the Peace Movement Party (PMP), which claimed ownership of the logo adopted by the NDC.
The court further ruled that the PMP was not joined as a party in the original suit, despite laying claim to the disputed party logo.
Reacting to the development, Obioha accused the judiciary of inconsistency and alleged that public confidence in the courts had declined. He also blamed the current administration for weakening democratic institutions.
He said the judiciary had become unreliable in political matters and should be strengthened to restore public trust.
Obioha further warned that political exclusion could trigger a national crisis ahead of the 2027 elections.
“If Peter Obi is frustrated and is not on the ballot, there will be no election in 2027. That’s not a threat. It is going to work out that way,” he said.
He added that widespread public frustration with the system could lead to political instability, insisting that Nigerians were “tired” of the current governance structure.
