Former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has urged the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria to take a more active role in resolving conflicts between serving governors and their deputies.
Ganduje made the call in Abuja when members of the forum visited him ahead of its annual national conference, stressing that a harmonious relationship between governors and their deputies would promote good governance and political stability across the country.
The former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said the forum was well-positioned to intervene whenever disagreements arise between governors and their deputies, regardless of political party differences.
According to him, the experience and influence of former deputy governors could help prevent avoidable political crises that may hinder effective administration at the state level.
Ganduje, who served as deputy governor of Kano State before becoming governor, described the office of the deputy governor as one of the most challenging positions in Nigeria’s political structure but noted that it remains vital to governance and constitutional succession.
He explained that deputy governors play a significant role by supporting governors and ensuring continuity in government when necessary.
The APC chieftain also urged the former deputy governors to look into the increasing tensions between outgoing governors and their successors, describing the situation as a recurring issue affecting Nigeria’s democratic development.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria, Chris Akomas, said the organisation was committed to promoting national unity, good governance and sustainable development.
Akomas, a former deputy governor of Abia State, stated that the forum’s activities are driven by a commitment to nation-building through collaboration with government institutions, academic bodies and development partners.
