The Chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc, Amaka Onwughalu, is set to receive the prestigious Woman of the Year award at the 5th Anambra Man of the Year (AMTY) Awards, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s banking industry, corporate governance, and leadership.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the AMTY Planning Committee, Adaoma Igwedibia, who said the honour acknowledges Onwughalu’s distinguished career spanning more than three decades and her remarkable impact on the country’s financial services sector.
According to Igwedibia, Onwughalu has consistently demonstrated excellence, integrity, resilience, and professional competence throughout her career, rising through virtually every level of the banking profession before becoming the chairman of a leading commercial bank.
She noted that Onwughalu made history as the first woman to chair the board of Fidelity Bank Plc, where she has continued to provide strategic leadership that has strengthened the bank’s corporate governance framework and long-term growth.
Igwedibia also highlighted another landmark achievement in Onwughalu’s career, recalling that she became the first female Managing Director from Anambra State when she was appointed to lead Mainstreet Bank in 2014, further establishing her reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading banking executives.
Before assuming her current role, Onwughalu held several senior executive positions across the banking industry, including Deputy Managing Director of Skye Bank Plc, where she oversaw corporate banking, treasury operations, structured finance, and international funding. She also served as Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Reliance Bank Limited in 2005.
In addition to chairing Fidelity Bank, she currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Blueshield Financial Services Limited, where she continues to provide strategic leadership within the financial services industry.
Onwughalu holds a degree in Economics from University of Buckingham, an MBA from University of Port Harcourt, and a Master’s degree in Corporate Governance from Leeds Metropolitan University. She has also completed executive programmes at Harvard University, Stanford University, University of Cambridge, INSEAD, and IMD Business School.
She is a Fellow and member of several professional bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, the Institute of Directors Nigeria, the Institute of Internal Auditors of Nigeria, and the Institute of Credit Administration.
Beyond her achievements in banking, the AMTY Planning Committee said the award also recognises Onwughalu’s dedication to mentoring young professionals, promoting ethical leadership, and contributing to institutional development within Nigeria’s financial sector.
Igwedibia described the honour as a celebration of a woman whose career has been defined by excellence, discipline, and lasting impact, noting that her accomplishments continue to inspire a new generation of professionals and leaders across Nigeria.
