Uniform for NYSC in Major ReformThe Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a sweeping reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing a civilian leadership structure, a new uniform, and other measures aimed at repositioning the scheme for greater efficiency and national development.Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the development on Monday while briefing State House correspondents after the weekly FEC meeting.According to the minister, the council approved seven key reforms, including the retention of the NYSC’s one-year service duration, the introduction of skills-based training for corps members, the digitalisation of the scheme, and the replacement of its military-style leadership structure with a civilian-led system.Olawande said the reforms are designed to modernise the NYSC and enhance its relevance in addressing contemporary national development challenges.He described the approval as the first comprehensive review of the scheme since its establishment in 1973, adding that the reform package was developed through extensive consultations involving the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the Federal Ministry of Education, and the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination.The minister expressed confidence that the reforms would strengthen the NYSC’s operations, improve service delivery, and better equip corps members with practical skills for life after national service.
