The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Enugu State local government election, alleging that the exercise was a “selection” rather than a genuine democratic contest.
The party also condemned the movement restrictions imposed across the state during Saturday’s election, claiming the measure disrupted businesses and affected the livelihoods of residents.
In a statement signed by its media team member, Paul Anigbogu, the ADC alleged that opposition parties were denied a level playing field, while candidates backed by the ruling party had already been chosen.
The party described the election as an “APC vs APC” exercise and questioned the use of public funds for what it called a predetermined process.
According to the ADC, traders, commercial drivers and other daily income earners were affected by the restriction, resulting in economic losses across the state.
The party said: “This is not an election. It is selection. Other parties were not given a level playing field. There was no genuine contest.”
The ADC further accused the Enugu State Government of abusing executive powers and taxpayers’ funds by allegedly imposing handpicked leaders across the 17 local government areas.
The party’s 2027 governorship candidate, Ocho Obodoeze, was presented as a candidate who would promote competitive elections and greater grassroots participation if elected.
The ADC also pledged to prioritise road construction, timely payment of workers’ and teachers’ salaries, pension payments and protection of residents’ freedom of movement and right to conduct businesses.
