Former Vice President and 2027 presidential hopeful, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over an alleged breach of his private banking information after an unknown person reportedly transferred money into one of his personal accounts.
Atiku, through a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said the transaction was made into a private account domiciled with a commercial bank in Nigeria.
According to the statement, the transfer carried the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign,” despite the fact that neither Atiku nor his campaign team requested, authorised, or had prior knowledge of the payment.
The former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate described the development as disturbing, stressing that the account involved was strictly private and its details were not publicly available.
He questioned how an unknown individual gained access to his confidential banking information, warning that the incident raises serious concerns about the protection of Nigerians’ financial data.
“If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe,” the statement said.
Atiku further alleged that the leak could have come from individuals with privileged access to sensitive information, warning that such exposure could put account holders at risk from criminals, including kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, and fraudsters.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain described the incident as part of what he called a series of suspicious developments ahead of the 2027 general elections and urged security agencies to investigate.
He also dismissed what he described as attempts to tarnish his image, insisting that he remains focused on offering credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
