Alleged Coup Plot: Denied Promotion Pushed Me Toward Overthrow Plan, Colonel Ma’aji Tells Investigators Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji, one of the principal suspects standing trial over the alleged failed coup plot against the administration of President Bola Tinubu, has told investigators that repeated denial of promotion to the rank of brigadier general contributed to his decision to allegedly plot against the government.

According to reports, Ma’aji claimed that frustration over his stalled military career played a significant role in his actions.The colonel was eventually arrested on September 29, 2025, following what he described as an elaborate operation by senior military authorities, who allegedly exploited his desire for promotion to lure him into custody.Ma’aji is among several individuals facing trial in connection with the alleged coup plot, as security agencies continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the case.The allegations remain before the court, and the accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in accordance with the law.
