Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has accused Nigeria’s security agencies and the judiciary of working together to suppress dissent and criminalise free speech.
Sowore made the allegation in a post on X on Wednesday shortly after appearing in court over his ongoing legal matter.
Reacting to the court proceedings, the activist launched a scathing attack on those involved in his prosecution, describing them as “a bunch of jokers masquerading as law enforcers.”
According to Sowore, his prosecution is part of a broader coordinated effort by top officials within the country’s security and judicial institutions to silence critics and stifle dissenting voices.
The outspoken activist, who has consistently criticised the government and security agencies over issues relating to governance, human rights and accountability, maintained that he would not be intimidated by the legal action against him.
His latest comments have sparked fresh reactions on social media, with supporters and critics weighing in on the allegations against the country’s law enforcement and judicial institutions.
The security agencies and the judiciary have not publicly responded to Sowore’s latest claims as of the time of filing this report.
