presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has questioned President Bola Tinubu’s decision to skip the 2026 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Atiku asked whether Tinubu fears facing scrutiny in the United States, drawing a comparison with Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro.
In a statement by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku also referenced the past US forfeiture proceedings involving funds linked to Tinubu, while stressing that he was not claiming the President is legally barred from entering the US.
Tinubu will miss the 81st UNGA, with Vice President Kashim Shettima leading Nigeria’s delegation.
Atiku questioned why Tinubu has missed the UNGA since 2024 and asked whether his repeated absence is connected to concerns over scrutiny in the United States.
