Boko Haram fighters reportedly used AI chatbots including ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Claude, Meta AI and DeepSeek to obtain technical and military information, according to a University of Cambridge study.
Researchers interviewed 27 former members of ISWAP and JAS. Several said the groups used AI before, during and after attacks, including for analysing battlefield information and understanding weapons.
The study also found that some fighters were trained to bypass AI safety restrictions, while specialised units reportedly helped commanders use the technology.
Researchers warned that the rapid development of AI could make its misuse by armed groups an increasing security concern.
Major AI companies prohibit their systems from being used for terrorism, violence and weapons development.
