The Leader of the Njiko Igbo Forum, Rev. Dr. Okechukwu Christopher Obioha, has warned that Nigeria may face a breakdown in the conduct of the 2027 general elections if Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is prevented from appearing on the ballot.
Obioha made the remarks following a recent Federal High Court judgment in Lokoja which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party.
The ruling, delivered by Justice Isah Dashen,
also addressed issues surrounding the Peace Movement Party (PMP), which had claimed ownership of the logo adopted by the NDC. The court noted that PMP was not joined as a party in the original suit, despite its claim over the disputed symbol.
Reacting to the development, Obioha criticised the judiciary, alleging declining public confidence due to inconsistent rulings. He also accused the current administration of weakening democratic institutions, particularly the judiciary.
He warned that excluding Peter Obi from the 2027 presidential ballot could trigger a major political crisis.
“If Peter Obi is frustrated and is not on the ballot, there will be no election in 2027… call it prophecy, I’m a reverend, but I am warning Nigerians,” he said.
Obioha further claimed that frustration among citizens could lead to widespread rejection of the political system, adding that trust in government institutions is already low.
He also expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would not remain in office beyond May next year, stating that Nigerians are “tired of the system.”
The comments add to ongoing political tension and legal disputes surrounding party registrations and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
