Deregistration case against NDC orchestrated to weaken opposition ahead 2027 polls

Arise Television anchor, Rufai Oseni, has alleged that the legal challenge targeting the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was deliberately orchestrated to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during The Morning Show on Arise Television, Oseni said the timing of the lawsuit raised serious questions, noting that it was filed just two days after Peter Obi reportedly joined the NDC.

According to him, Obi officially joined the party on May 3, while the suit seeking to nullify the party’s registration was instituted on May 5 by what he described as a “faceless group.”
Oseni claimed the development followed a pattern of legal actions against opposition parties in recent months, suggesting that similar court challenges had previously been used to destabilize political movements.
He also questioned why the groups now challenging the NDC registration had not raised objections earlier, describing the sudden legal action as suspicious.

The broadcaster further referenced earlier court proceedings involving the ADC, saying the judgment had already attracted widespread criticism in political circles.
Oseni urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue the necessary access code that would allow the party upload required nomination documents, warning that any perception of restricting opposition participation could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

He maintained that the sequence of events surrounding Obi’s entry into the NDC and the subsequent court case suggested a coordinated attempt to weaken the opposition, although he did not provide evidence to support the claim.
Daily Post Nigeria reported the remarks, with Oseni quoted as saying:

“Let me start with NDC registration. I’m not surprised. I think I predicted it here. I said it. More will happen.
You know why? There’s a grand attempt to ensure that opposition is weakened before the election…”
Daily Post Nigeria published the report via its Politics desk.
