Implementation Of 2025 ASUU-FG Agreement, Faults Education Ministry’s Narrative

Implementation of 2025 ASUU-FG Agreement, Faults Education Ministry’s Narrative . Education stakeholder and academic, Jeff Godwin Doki, has called for greater public understanding of the implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government, alleging that the Ministry of Education has misrepresented key aspects of the process.

In an opinion piece published on July 5, 2026, Doki said the clarification was necessary to address what he described as widespread misconceptions surrounding the agreement. He said the explanation was intended to inform the public, students, parents, the media and other stakeholders in the education sector.

According to Doki, the journey to the 2025 agreement began with negotiations that started in 2006 and culminated in the signing of the 2009 ASUU-Federal Government agreement on university funding, welfare and reforms. He noted that the government negotiating team was led by Chief Gamaliel Onosode, while ASUU was initially represented by Dr. Abdullahi Sule before Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie took over the role.He explained that ASUU made repeated efforts over the years to secure a renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, leading to the constitution of a government committee in 2017. Doki said subsequent committees chaired by Wale Babalakin, Jibril Munzali and Emeritus Prof. Nimi Briggs all produced draft agreements, but they were not adopted by the Federal Government.

According to him, the agreement eventually signed in December 2025 was based on the report of the committee chaired by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, which was submitted in February 2025.Doki maintained that a proper understanding of the history of the negotiations is essential to informed public discourse on the implementation of the ASUU-Federal Government agreement
