The Director of Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, has called for accountability among some Nigerian army generals and security leaders over the country’s worsening insecurity.
Amadi made the call on Friday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, while reacting to President Bola Tinubu’s approval for the expansion of the Nigerian Army.
The former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) argued that increasing troop numbers alone would not solve Nigeria’s security challenges, stressing that there are deeper problems within the country’s security strategy and leadership.
According to him, some military leaders must be held responsible for the security situation, adding that corruption among leaders affects national development and public confidence.
“Some of our generals and leaders must be held accountable. When the leadership is corrupt, it affects the entire nation,” Amadi said.
He noted that corruption in the public sector reduces efficiency, weakens national commitment and undermines the government’s ability to tackle critical challenges.
Amadi further warned that expanding the military without addressing leadership issues, welfare and strategy may not produce the desired results.
He lamented that the military is increasingly being deployed for various non-traditional duties, including peacekeeping operations, road management and combating criminals across the country.
