Former lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye, has accused President Bola Tinubu of taking funds from Nigerians through the removal of fuel subsidy and transferring the benefits to state governors.
Melaye made the allegation while reacting to the ongoing debate over the Federal Government’s fuel subsidy removal policy and its impact on Nigerians.
The former senator claimed that governors who are benefiting from increased federal allocations following the subsidy removal cannot guarantee President Tinubu’s victory in the 2027 presidential election.
According to him, the governors’ support would not translate into electoral success for the president.
“You took money away from Nigerians in the name of subsidy removal and gave it to the governors in return for their votes and support,” Melaye said in a post on Facebook.
He added that the administration was now turning back to Nigerians to hold governors accountable despite allegedly taking money away from them.
“Now the election is almost here and you realised that the governors can’t deliver you, and you’ve now come back to ask Nigerians, the same people you took away monies from their pockets, to go and hold the governors accountable,” he wrote.
The subsidy removal policy has continued to generate political debate ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures criticising the move over its effect on living costs.
DAILY POST reports that former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has promised to restore fuel subsidy if elected president in 2027.
