【PHOTOS】Cross River Police Launch Operation Velvet Marine to Tackle Piracy, SmugglingThe Cross River State Police Command has launched Operation Velvet Marine, a specialised security operation aimed at tackling piracy, sea robbery, smuggling and other maritime crimes across the state’s waterways.The operation was officially launched on Friday, September 11, 2026, at the Dolphin Marine Base in Calabar by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue.Speaking during the launch, the CP said the operation was part of efforts to strengthen maritime security in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to dominate the waterways and prevent criminal elements from operating freely.He charged Marine Police personnel to carry out their duties with professionalism, discipline and accountability while respecting human rights and working closely with other security and maritime agencies.According to the State Marine Officer, CSP Frankline Mbah, the operation will involve daily visibility patrols, intelligence-led operations, joint patrols and engagement with riverine communities.The operation will cover major waterways including the Calabar Channel, Qua River, Great Kwa River and adjoining creeks, with particular attention to preventing attacks on commuters, fishermen and maritime businesses.
The Police Command also appealed to residents of riverine communities and maritime stakeholders to provide credible and timely information that could help security agencies prevent and respond to criminal activities on the waterways.The Command said Operation Velvet Marine would continue throughout the Ember Season and beyond, as part of efforts to protect lives and property and create a safer environment for maritime commerce and legitimate livelihoods in Cross River State.CP Ordue assured residents, maritime operators and visitors that the Police Command remained committed to denying criminals the opportunity to exploit the state’s waterways for unlawful activities.
