ISS: Boko Haram Increasingly Appointing Cameroonian Fighters to Senior RolesThe terrorist group Boko Haram is increasingly appointing Cameroonian fighters to senior leadership positions, according to new research by the Institute for Security Studies.The report said the development has contributed to the group’s resilience, with the Cameroonian commanders playing key operational and strategic roles within the insurgent movement.According to the research, the commanders provide Boko Haram with access to local resources, intelligence and information on potential targets for attacks and extortion activities.
The study noted that the growing involvement of foreign fighters in the group’s leadership structure has strengthened its operational capacity and ability to sustain its activities across parts of the Lake Chad region.The findings underscore the evolving nature of the Boko Haram insurgency and highlight the need for enhanced regional cooperation among countries in the Lake Chad Basin to counter the group’s cross-border operations.
