The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, has claimed that Nigeria recorded about four million more births than the entire European Union in 2025.
Musk made the statement on Saturday through his official X account, attributing the information to his artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.
“Nigeria alone had 4 million more births than the entire EU last year,” Musk wrote.
Data cited from Grok indicated that Nigeria recorded an estimated 7.8 million births in 2025, while the European Union recorded about 3.5 million births during the same period.
The figures highlight Nigeria’s rapidly growing population and its significantly higher birth rate compared with many developed regions.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has continued to experience population growth, raising concerns over pressure on infrastructure, employment, healthcare, education and the economy.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) had in February 2026 disclosed that about 14 million Nigerian children had their births officially registered within two years, describing it as progress in improving access to legal identity documentation.
However, population growth remains a major concern amid economic challenges. World Bank data reportedly showed that Nigeria’s poverty rate stood at 63 per cent in 2025, with many citizens facing increased living costs.
Meanwhile, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, recently stated that Nigeria’s economy was growing faster than its population for the first time, following reforms by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Nigeria’s population is currently estimated at about 250 million, making it one of the fastest-growing populations globally.
