The National Leader of the Peoples Redemption Party, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has said that opposition parties in Nigeria operate under constant political pressure and uncertainty, insisting that “no opposition party sleeps with both eyes closed.”
Baba-Ahmed, a former aide to President Bola Tinubu, stated that only the ruling All Progressives Congress enjoys relative political comfort.
He made the remarks while reacting to a recent Federal High Court judgment in Lokoja, Kogi State, which set aside the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress as a political party.
The court had earlier directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to register the NDC, but that decision was overturned following an application by the Peace Movement Party, which argued it was not joined in the original suit.
Delivering judgment, Justice Isah Dashen ruled that all relevant parties must be properly heard before any substantive decision can be taken in the matter.
Reacting during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, Baba-Ahmed described the development as “unnerving,” warning that political parties must remain vigilant.
“I don’t think any party in the opposition sleeps with both eyes; only APC does,” he said.
He added that claims of comfort within opposition ranks are unrealistic, stressing that political survival in Nigeria requires constant alertness and resilience.
