The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has directed lawyers and court officials to immediately stop using the title “Barrister” as a prefix before their names in all official dealings with the Supreme Court.
The directive, which takes immediate effect, was issued on the grounds that the practice does not conform with the professional standards expected at the nation’s highest court.
The order affects litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars and other lawyers involved in official engagements with the Supreme Court.
A memorandum dated July 13, 2026, and signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi, conveyed the CJN’s directive.
The circular stated that the continued use of “Barrister” before names was considered inappropriate and inconsistent with the level of professionalism the Supreme Court seeks to maintain.
“I am directed by the Honourable the Chief Justice of Nigeria to notify all Litigation Staff, Legal Practitioners, Court Registrars, and Lawyers that the use of the title ‘Barrister’ as a prefix to names is inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards of professionalism expected within the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” the memo stated.
The directive requires lawyers to remove the title from official correspondence, court records, legal documents, identity materials and other forms of official communication involving the Supreme Court.
Heads of departments and unit leaders were also instructed to ensure strict compliance with the order among officers under their supervision.
The Supreme Court further warned that all concerned officers must discontinue the use of the title “Barrister” before their names in all official engagements with immediate effect.
