Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have thwarted an alleged reprisal attack on a Fulani settlement in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, arresting two suspects linked to the planned assault.
Security sources disclosed that the incident occurred around 11:23 a.m. on July 27, when troops of Sector 1, Operation Enduring Peace, stationed in Jengre, responded to a distress call over an attempted attack on a Fulani settlement in Pandauda Community.
The planned attack was reportedly linked to the killing of a civilian who was allegedly attacked by suspected herders after he resisted the grazing of cattle on his farmland.
A security source said the swift response of the troops prevented the situation from escalating into a wider communal crisis.
“Troops responded swiftly to the distress report and successfully prevented the situation from escalating into a wider communal conflict,” the source said.
The two suspects arrested during the operation were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Jengre Division, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
“The suspects have been transferred to the police for further investigation and necessary legal action,” the source added.
Military authorities said troops have maintained a strong presence in the affected area to prevent any breakdown of law and order while investigations continue.
The operation, according to security sources, highlights the commitment of Operation Enduring Peace to preventing retaliatory attacks, protecting communities, and promoting peace in Plateau State amid recurring tensions between farming and herding communities.
