Crisis rocks Adamawa ADC as supporters protest alleged move to replace governorship candidate. Fresh cracks have emerged in the Adamawa State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following allegations that the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is backing moves to replace its governorship candidate, Omar Suleiman, popularly known as OMarana, ahead of the 2027 general elections.The crisis escalated on Wednesday as hundreds of OMarana’s supporters staged a protest at the party’s state secretariat in Yola, accusing some party leaders of plotting to substitute him as the ADC governorship candidate.The demonstrators, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Hands Off OMarana,” “Respect Internal Democracy,” and “No to Imposition,” insisted that OMarana remains the party’s legitimate candidate and vowed to resist any attempt to replace him.Speaking during the protest, one of the demonstrators, Damaris Yalawa, warned that removing OMarana would undermine the party’s electoral prospects in Adamawa State.Another supporter, Madu Umar, described the alleged move as an attack on the democratic process, insisting that party members would oppose any attempt to impose another candidate.The protest comes days after the Director-General of the OMarana Governorship Campaign Organisation, Mark Wosi, dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the ADC had replaced OMarana with another aspirant, identified as Hammantukur.Wosi described the reports as false, maintaining that no such decision had been taken by the party.

He added that under the law, OMarana could only cease to be the party’s candidate through voluntary resignation or death.Sources familiar with the development alleged that OMarana’s emergence as the party’s governorship candidate was backed by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, who is also said to be his cousin.According to the sources, some influential figures within Atiku’s camp are pushing for a different candidate following Lawal’s reported disagreement with the party’s emerging leadership. The claims, however, remain unverified.The allegations have been strongly denied by Atiku Abubakar’s media office.In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the former Vice President’s media team described the reports as false, malicious and intended to create division within the ADC.The statement maintained that Atiku had neither initiated nor approved any move to replace any duly nominated candidate of the party, stressing that he remains committed to respecting the ADC’s internal democratic processes and decisions of its constitutionally recognised organs.The media office urged party members and the public to disregard the allegations, insisting that Atiku remains focused on uniting the ADC and leading the party into the 2027 general elections.
