The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has explained why he selected former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwassiyya Movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as his running mate ahead of the January 2027 presidential election.
Obi, in an interview with Sun, said his decision was based on what he described as Kwankwaso’s commitment to lifting people out of poverty and improving the country through education and human capital development.
According to the former Anambra State governor, he and Kwankwaso share similar ideas about rebuilding Nigeria’s economy and creating opportunities for citizens.
“Kwankwaso has the philosophy of pulling people out of poverty. I have the same philosophy,” Obi said.
He stressed that education would play a central role in transforming Nigeria, noting that both he and Kwankwaso believe in developing the nation’s human resources.
“I have made it clear that I will emphasise education. Education is going to change society. Nigeria must be seen to form its innermost human capital, which we need to develop. Kwankwaso believes in this. I do. We have synergy,” he added.
Obi also dismissed reports of a rift between him and Kwankwaso, insisting that both politicians remain united and focused on their strategies ahead of the 2027 election.
He said their partnership was built on shared values and a common vision of improving the living conditions of Nigerians.
