Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has commenced moves to challenge the Federal High Court judgment ordering the final forfeiture of 48 properties allegedly linked to him.
The legal action follows Wednesday’s ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, where Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) application for the permanent forfeiture of the assets.
The court held that Malami and other claimants failed to prove that the properties were legitimately acquired, ruling that they did not sufficiently counter suspicions that the assets were connected to proceeds of unlawful activities.
However, Malami, through a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, said he disagreed with parts of the judgment and had instructed his legal team to immediately file an appeal at the Court of Appeal.
The former minister argued that the ruling was not the final stage of the matter, stressing that the appellate process provides an opportunity for a comprehensive review of legal issues involved in the case.
Malami reaffirmed his respect for the rule of law, the Constitution and the independence of the judiciary, expressing confidence that justice would eventually prevail.
He appealed to Nigerians and the media to avoid drawing conclusions while the legal process continues, noting that every citizen has the constitutional right to seek redress through the courts.
The former Attorney-General also thanked his supporters, particularly residents of Kebbi State and Nigerians who have stood by him, assuring them that the development would not weaken his commitment to public service.
He urged his supporters to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding as the appeal process takes its course.
