Panic in Benue as Armed Herdsmen Attack Community, Shoot Resident, Loot Shops

Suspected armed herders have invaded Ankpechi community in Oglewu Ward, Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving residents terrified after shooting a resident and looting several shops.

The attackers reportedly stormed the community along the Otukpo-Oweto-Abuja Road on Thursday morning and opened fire sporadically, forcing traders, customers, and other residents to flee for safety.

The Chairman of Ohimini Local Government Area, Mr Gabriel Adole, who confirmed the incident, said the attack occurred between 8am and 9am, adding that the assailants were suspected to be armed herdsmen.
According to him, one person was shot during the attack and has been taken to a hospital for treatment.

“Yes, there was an attack this morning between 8am and 9am by suspected armed herdsmen. They came to Ankpechi community in Oglewu Ward, shooting sporadically. They shot one person, forcing residents to scamper for safety,” Adole said.

The council chairman added that the attackers broke into shops and carted away goods, especially food items, claiming the incident showed how close the attackers were operating around local communities.
“They burgled shops in the area and carted away goods, particularly food items. They could not get food elsewhere, so they came into Ohimini and used force to take food from our people,” he added.

Adole said community members identified the attackers as armed herders, while expressing hope that the injured victim would recover.
The latest attack has heightened concerns over the growing security challenges facing communities in Benue State, which has witnessed repeated clashes and attacks linked to suspected armed groups.
