Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has argued that Nigerian students should not be made to pay fees for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.
Yesufu stated that the responsibility of funding such examinations should not be placed on students and parents, stressing that education-related costs should be handled by the government to reduce the burden on families.
She made the remarks while reacting to concerns over the increasing financial pressure on Nigerian households, especially as
many parents struggle to meet basic needs.
According to her, making students pay examination fees could prevent some young Nigerians from accessing important academic opportunities.
She urged the government to prioritise education funding and ensure that financial challenges do not become a barrier to students pursuing their academic goals.
Her comments come amid public debate over the cost of WAEC and NECO registration fees, with various groups calling for measures to make secondary education more affordable for Nigerian families.
