Ali Modu Sheriff Rules Out Northern Support for Peter Obi in 2027Former Borno State Governor and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ali Modu Sheriff, has dismissed the prospects of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, emerging victorious in the 2027 presidential election, insisting that the Labour Party’s former presidential candidate would not enjoy the backing of Northern voters.Sheriff made the assertion during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he expressed confidence that Obi’s chances of securing widespread support across the North were slim.
According to the former governor, Northern voters are unlikely to support Obi in the next presidential election, despite his performance in the 2023 polls, where he recorded notable votes in some Northern states.”I am not worried about Peter Obi at all because I know that Northerners will never vote for Peter Obi,” Sheriff said.Responding to suggestions that Obi performed strongly in states such as Plateau and Nasarawa during the 2023 election, Sheriff argued that the political landscape had changed.
He also alleged that Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State negatively affected relations with Northerners, a claim that has not been independently verified.Sheriff further expressed confidence that the APC would retain power in the 2027 general election, maintaining that President Bola Tinubu should complete a second term in office before the presidency returns to the North in line with the principle of power rotation.Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election and finished third, has yet to formally declare his intention to contest the 2027 election but remains one of the opposition figures widely expected to seek the presidency.
