Ebola Outbreak: Senate Urges Tinubu Government to Release Emergency Funds, Enforce Screening at All BordersThe Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to immediately release emergency funds from the Service Wide Votes to strengthen efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak and prevent further transmission. The lawmakers warned that delays in funding could undermine the country’s response to the public health emergency. The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Francis Faduyile, who raised concerns about gaps in health screening at international airports and other entry points.
The Senate also called for adequate funding for the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and Port Health Services. The lawmakers urged the government to make health screening compulsory for all international passengers arriving through airports, seaports and designated land borders. Proposed measures include health declaration forms, temperature checks and symptom assessments, with enhanced screening for travellers who visited or transited through affected areas within the previous 21 days. The Senate also called for trained health officers, thermal scanners, protective equipment and isolation facilities at entry points, alongside functional treatment centres across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. It further urged the National Assembly to replace the Quarantine Act of 1926 with modern public health legislation. However, lawmakers rejected a proposal for senators to conduct on-site visits to major points of entry.👉 Follow Daily Times Nigeria for more updates.#DailyTimesNigeria #Ebola #NigerianSenate #PublicHealth #trending
