Barrister Venatius Ikem has resigned as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, citing internal divisions, leadership challenges and what he described as a crisis of direction within the party.Ikem announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the PDP National Secretary and the party’s State Secretary in Cross River State. He stated that his decision would take immediate effect. In the letter, the outgoing chairman said his decision followed careful reflection on the state of the party and his ability to continue serving effectively under the prevailing circumstances. He expressed concern that internal disagreements and divergent positions were weakening the party’s ability to maintain unity and pursue a clear and decisive political direction.According to Ikem, the PDP in Cross River State is facing challenges involving its direction, leadership and internal cohesion. He said the situation had reduced the party’s effectiveness and could undermine the sacrifices and efforts of members who had worked to strengthen the party over the years if the problems remained unresolved. The resignation comes as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, a period when parties are expected to strengthen their structures, resolve internal disputes and prepare for electoral contests.Ikem said he had found it increasingly difficult to reconcile his responsibilities as state chairman with the internal dynamics and disagreements within the party. He maintained that stepping aside was a decision he believed was necessary after examining the situation.Despite his concerns, Ikem expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Cross River PDP over the past five years.

He acknowledged the support of party leaders, members and supporters who stood by him throughout his tenure. The outgoing chairman specifically appreciated Senator Professor Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe for their encouragement and support during challenging moments in his political journey. He also recognised the contribution of the PDP’s National Leader, Chief Nyesom Wike, describing his role in the party’s collective efforts as significant.Ikem further thanked his supporters across Cross River State, particularly the people of Obudu, his immediate constituency, for their loyalty and support over the years.
