The All Progressives Congress (APC) has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding immediate enforcement of the Supreme Court’s judgment on political parties’ membership registers ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party made the demand in a letter dated October 9, 2026, jointly signed by its National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, and National Secretary, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru. In the letter, the APC urged INEC to verify whether all political parties had submitted their digital membership registers within the period prescribed by law and to apply the stipulated consequences where violations are established. The party’s request follows the Supreme Court’s September 24 judgment in the case involving INEC and the Zenith Labour Party. The ruling restored key provisions of Section 77 of the Electoral Act 2026 governing the submission and use of membership registers for party primaries, congresses and conventions.Under the provisions, political parties are required to submit their membership registers to INEC at least 21 days before their primaries, congresses or conventions.
Only members listed in the submitted register are eligible to vote or be voted for in the internal elections. The APC also called on INEC to ensure that political parties use only the registers submitted to the commission, warning that failure to comply with the law could attract sanctions, including being barred from fielding candidates in the general election where the statutory conditions are met.The ruling party maintained that the Supreme Court’s decision was binding on INEC and urged the commission to implement it in accordance with the Electoral Act and the Constitution. The development comes as political parties prepare for the 2027 general elections, with compliance with electoral laws and the conduct of internal party elections emerging as key issues ahead of the polls.
